Cranberries and the Tradition of the Krkonoše

Cranberries grow almost everywhere around us in the Krkonoše Mountains. In late summer, you can spot little bright red berries ripening in the grass — typical treasures of the region’s mountain nature.

Our cranberry liqueur is more than just a drink — it’s a taste of the Krkonoše in a glass. We make it from cranberries that have been part of these mountains for generations, and we aim to preserve their natural flavour and aroma. If you stop by our cottage, we’ll gladly pour you a sample and tell you more about how it’s made.

Wherever you go from Chalupa Na Rozcestí, you’re likely to see small clusters of these unassuming shrubs along the way. Our cranberry liqueur has been awarded the regional label KRKONOŠE – originální produkt. This certification confirms that the product is rooted in local tradition and meets high standards of quality and care for nature.

Why Cranberries Are So Beloved

Cranberries are especially known for their rich nutritional profile. They contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, and other compounds that support wellbeing:

  • Vitamin C, A, and B vitamins
  • Antioxidants, which help protect cells from free radicals
  • Minerals such as potassium, manganese, and magnesium
  • Organic acids and tannins with natural antibacterial properties

Thanks to these nutrients, cranberries have long been associated with supporting immune health.

The Taste of the Krkonoše in Cranberry Liqueur

Cranberries have always been part of life in the Krkonoše. For centuries, homemade liqueurs made from cranberries were valued not only for their rich taste but also for their beneficial qualities. We continue this tradition with care and respect.

We gently macerate ripe berries in fruit brandy together with sugar and selected spices to release their natural colour, scent, and flavour. Cranberries are also rich in natural compounds called proanthocyanidins, valued for their health‑supporting potential.

The result is a genuine Krkonoše cranberry liqueur — free from artificial colours or flavours — where the character of the berries truly shines.

Cranberries — Small Berries with Many Uses

Cranberries have been widely used in our region for generations. Their distinctive sweet‑tart flavour works beautifully in both sweet desserts and hearty mountain dishes. Traditionally, they are used in:

  • jams and compotes
  • sauces for venison and other meats
  • cakes, sweet breads, and home‑made syrups

Beyond the kitchen, cranberries have found a place in natural body care. Extracts from the fruit and seed oil are used in cosmetics because they contain valuable natural compounds and antioxidants that help protect and nourish the skin.

That’s why cranberries remain small but treasured gems of the Krkonoše Mountains.
